“Re/Trato” is a body of work can that clearly can be classified as a portrait of a portrait. These photographic images document the austere audience that inhabits the urban landscape. This audience speaks of our culture without the intelligence to formulate words. Their faces look blindly into our space as we walk by them. Nelson Hippolyte documents their erosive condition that terrorizes us, as we exist in their presence.
Nelson Hippolyte is no stranger to projecting his voice in text through reporting, through language as a professor of Spanish, and visually in his photographic images. Hippolyte is a professor of Spanish at Ohio University. Hippolyte moved to Athens, Ohio in 1996 from Pittsburgh where he completed his doctorate study. This followed his celebrated and actively pursued journalism career in Venezuela. He has published five books. He currently is responsible for heading the Ohio University’s Study Abroad Program in Pamplona, Spain for the Department of Modern Languages. It was in Pamplona, San Sebastian, Bilbao, Barcelona and, especially, the streets of Chueca in Madrid where Hippolyte found this body of images that evolved into the visual research documented in this volume.
